How to Capture Employer Information
Nationally about 10% of the money that corporations contribute each year is reserved to help match employee gifts.
So, I would not be surprised if 10% of your database has a connection to a matching gift company particularly in Philly.
Also, if you have the time and resources I would not even consider going with a Passive Matching Program.
With an Active Program, which includes brochures, company look ups on your website, sending special thank yous, etc.,
you will see a significant increase in matching gifts. In 1955, when matching gifts began, they were pretty much exclusively
targeted to match gifts made to colleges and universities. Today, more than one-fourth of all companies with matching gift
companies place no restrictions on the type of nonprofit that can qualify for a matching gift - so, it's pretty much free money if you do the asking.
The best thing the Zoo can do is to obtain business information from everyone coming through the gate.
Do a "Place Your Busines Card Here" fishbowl contest for a free return admission to the Zoo.
If you have the names of corporate sponsors at your various exhibits highlight those that offer matching gift programs that can benefit the Zoo.
And, don't forget to find out where the spouses of all of your volunteers work (including the Board and all of the Zoo's various Advisory Boards)
as many companies will match gifts made by spouses.

How to Increase Matching Gift $Dollars
“We added a matching reference to our receipts a few months ago, and it has really paid off.
I have standard wording that is included on our pledge coupons, mailers, and all receipts:
Will your employer match this gift? Find out at (E-Match link) http://www.hepdata.com/ematch.cfm
This will catch some donors for whom we have no employment information, but who do work for a matching company.
I have also persuaded some of our on-campus constituents to include this wording in their letters, web sites, magazines, etc.
As a result, the matching applications coming in through the colleges have increased and the corresponding corporate matching funds have increased by over 20%.”

2008 Volunteer Time Study
According to Marianna Funk, Director of Research for HEP Development, “the matching of volunteer time is definitely
on the upswing and is in fact one of the most frequent changes to the database” of 16,400 corporations and subsidiaries currently tracked by HEP.
The study revealed that 4009 companies and subsidiaries now match volunteer time or almost 25% of the database now matches volunteer time.
Access to the data is currently available on line through Gift Plus On-Line and will soon be available as well in E-Match,
a webpage that is customized for a school or non-profit that tells a donor or alum whether his or her employer is match eligible.
Pricing and examples of both products are available at www.hepdata.com
